Probably sending a page, like to old school pagers. Though I'm not sure if people actually use pagers on the receiving end. If you sniff POCSAG radio traffic with an SDR a good amount of the traffic are alerts from various industrial sensors

The left has shifted left, and expected the window to follow them.

It's very clear, people that want to think their echo chamber perfectly represents actual reality just choose not to understand

You'd have to have the most selective feed of only small, esoteric subs to think it isn't

They could call it XCode. Oh wait...

Sure it was Amazon? Sounds like a scam

The frustrating part is that since so many companies collect PII under the guise of security (and then use it for advertising) it's harder to tell if this is a legal scam or illegal scam.

>if this is a legal scam or illegal scam.

the fact this is something to be distinguished says a lot about where we are now and none of what it says is good

He calls "legal scam" what you probably call "legit business"

I has Facebook send a verification through Whatsapp, I legitimately thought it was a scam until I googled it and realized they do actually send verification that way.

Still annoying, but at least then it's the same company.

Yes. I'd gone round to see her and I checked her history to ensure it wasn't dodgy.

I'm pretty sure the meme WAS the message. What other messages are being distributed through random meme sharing, where the recipient has to know it contains some secondary hidden message and requires the means to decode it?!

It didn't matter; once I found out even the possibilities for steganography across a large catalog of JPEG images, it was game over for me. It doesn't matter if there were zero or five dozen secret messages in the files I forwarded. I didn't want to be a conduit for that possibility.

The risk, of becoming a mule, an unwitting accessory to some evil cause, was just far outweighing the rewards of sharing dumb crap with my mother, you know?

But.. unless your mother or the people she was sharing them with were the intended target of the secret messages how would you be a mule? Do you think terrorists were depending on you to save the memes so that later they could break into your sweet meme stash and find all their evil secret plans?

Normally would not comment just to make fun of someone but this is just a wild take, how could you be sure that HN is not full of coded messages?

You're begging the question that secret messages necessarily require "targets" to work or to be passed along. That is not true.

If your pastime involved trading envelopes with other collectors of envelopes, and you started passing along a bunch of sealed envelopes with unknown contents, how would you feel? Or if you enjoyed well-constructed cartons, and you found yourself trafficking in sealed cartons with unknown contents? That would basically make you a shipping, receiving, and logistics provider. Anything at all could be in those parcels. Why do it? Why open up to risk?

The main point here is that there was no point to my trading in memes. It was recreation; it was optional; it was totally a lark with my boomer mom and her audience. I had no reason to look at these memes and I had no reason to forward them on. Sure, the risk was very, very low that anyone "evil" was encoding "secret messages" or "targeting" anyone I knew. But since I had no reason to engage in this activity in the first place, why not quit? Why not just distance myself? Thereby removing 100% of the risk.

To be honest with you, you haven't convinced me. Secret messages do in fact require "targets"... I would love to hear an example of a situation where someone might want to send a secret message with no "targets" in mind. For all you know, my replies are coded messages and you are providing the cover for it right now. And to use your example were I trying to traffic in something illicit, handing it to a random carton or envelope collector in the hopes that they will trade it again to the intended person would be an extremely risky and ineffective method of doing that, so ineffective in fact that I would never consider that to be possible. Someone attaching a package to the underside of your car and the target grabbing it when you park would be much more likely, would actually make sense, and still is not really a risk worth considering.

I don't agree with you at all, nor do I understand how your mind works, but I very much appreciate you taking the time to respond and respect your commitment not to facilitate anything nefarious even though we disagree.

Seems the decision to deprioritize n95s was done by the Obama administration https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_National_Stockpile

This is a congressional decision not a presidential obe and it was done after the dems lost the majority because of the incllination towards austerity that always develops when a dem is president. Would you like to go over exactly what republican votes led to this?

Yes, please do so. Because there's plenty of Democrat majority Congresses in that time range that chose to not renew the supply

Let's party like its 2009 We're dealing with the aftermath of the morgage crisis due in no small part to the legal and regulatory environment of 2001-2007 under George Bush. We are also dealing with the swine flu pandemic which is what actually depletes our strategic supplies in the first place.

By Mid 2010 we pass with great contention and argument both Dodd Frank and the ACA. By August we could finally declare the swine flu pandemic over and congress is worrying about their campaigns and the 2011 budget.

This would have been a good time to get the job done and indeed this was tried. They couldn't get the 60 needed to pass the senate in order to pass the 2011 budget and indeed no budget was passed we instead relies on continuing resolutions to fund the government at current levels which left no funds for the mission and no real time for some standalone effort. Fortunately we have 9 more years before this becomes a crisis.

2011-2018 Republicans controlled congress. In 2017,2018 Republicans controlled congress AND the presidency. In 2019 dems finally got congress back but couldn't do shit by virtue of Trump.

It's weird that you put this on the Dems when it is so so clearly a Republican fumble like the entire rest of the pandemic.

I remember getting a kick out of that back in the day. Even as a Gentoo user that built from stage 1 and over obsessed about my use flags and kernel settings lol

Though I thought it had a section in it about --funroll-loops, but I just be remembering another page
