What kind of program was that? Permanent employment contract (no "Befristung") without any co-financing through private investors, private grants, or the company's revenue?
This might be possible with public grants, but I've never seen it. They usually come with additional strings attached, such as being a de minimis subsidy (limited to 300k in a rolling 3 year window), requiring private co-funding (e.g. 50% for the whole project), being limited to a couple of months or maybe 2-3 years max, etc., so for competitive pay, you must almost always rely on some kind of "mixed financing": every penny above the salary that TVöD allows must be acquired from sources other than the gran. ymmv, part of the lack of attractiveness of public funding is the fact that each program differs in a million different ways.
It was a normal developer position (with PhD bonus possibly) at a private enterprise that only worked on public projects. No Befristung, no other surprises I got aware of. I was also a bit surprised that this existed, because with private-public constructs like Fraunhofer there usually are the limitations you mentioned (and the low salary). Here the limitations probably didn't exist as the company was 100% private.

I stopped paying attention to Brave years ago when it started fiddling with advertising-linked cryptocurrency and content injection. Is there any reason I should extend it any trust now?
If I recall correctly Brave scrapes the web via their users, cannot be individually disallowed in robots.txt and Brandon Eich is conversing in a pretty hostile manner in every thread about him or his company.
I'm not in the brave ecosystem otherwise nor a big fan. But the search engine was competitive with google when it was still cliqz, before it was shut down there and the leftovers bought by brave. And it still works really well.
Even if brave were problematic it would be the lesser evil to me.

It seems to be a similar phenomenon to productivity "gurus" who write and evangelize polyphasic sleep and "grindset" and so on - when you ask what they're using these superpowers to actually accomplish, they're very quiet. Or it's "coming soon." Or "I'm not going to waste time explaining to someone who obviously doesn't ~believe~." It quickly becomes religious.
But it is even more about timing. Nvidia shifted to RTX afterwards, opting to go for raytracing and upscaling instead of making strictly faster cards. Which made the last GTX cards very competitive for regular usage, raising its status.
Something I can't fault nvidia for is long term vision. If you ignore all the non-gaming uses, I can't see significant gains to be had by keeping evolving rasterization based rendering, which presumably would hit diminishing returns, upgrades would be less exciting, and be easier for AMD and others to compete against them. The trouble is a variety of reasons has meant that long term is likely going to be over a decade from when it was introduced before it's really commonplace or part of the furniture for the majority of games.

The cooling is not an issue for their current designs. Look at their AI1 Satellite specs. They clearly have the cooling figured out. The thing is that it's not a datacenter, it's a single rack. A single rack that weighs multiple tons.
You can figure out the weight of the thing based on the total power output, and "power to weight ratio" from SpaceX's own diagrams. Then look up how much it costs to launch per ton, and even look up what they are projecting it will cost with Starship. Even if they get costs down, it's still astronomical. I just can't figure out who would pay that much money to put a rack into space. There's no way the power savings are worth it. Unless you have some niche where you need your workload in space, I can't see the value at all.
It's not just the weight some outside groups have done the calculations and to dissipate the heat at the operating temperatures in the white paper without a heat pump to increase the radiator temp and thus efficiency requires a massive pump that would have to move nearly 69,000 kg of coolant per second continuously without fail.
But its so cheap compared to other watches, analog watches I mean. And it is also competitively priced against other smartwatches, isn't it? The price really shouldn't feel all that bad.

Seiko doesn't seem to make the movement in my watch anymore (5M83), but the equivalent automatic-winding mechanical watch can be had for under $200 still.

Sure. Also the Chinese watch brands offer good mechanical watches for even under $100, or for not much more (steeldive for example, or pagani), I'm aware.
But there are also a lot of watches that are more expensive, way more expensive than the pebble. Plus the typical price for the smartwatches, I just checked the Samsung galaxy watch, over 300€. The pebble looks fine there.

And I haven't even considered the vast majority of alternatives due to (IMO) ugly OLED screens. Wouldn't buy any of those even for 30$, but you're right, they can be quite expensive.
