Calling TNG a lab is a bit funny to me. It’s a consulting company that lets people hack on stuff between placements.


Yes and no.

Calling us a lab is not quite right, we are a consulting company.

But hacking is not just limited to in between placements, everybody has (at least) 2 days per month to do that, regardless of any work for customers.

Also, since AI is such a strategically important topic, we have a team that just works on AI stuff internally. That’s where R1T and R1T2 come from.


OT: I love that German has a word for “yes and no”: jein.

Sounds like a good use of "spare" time to me and not that different from many a lab I've been part of: someone gets a hunch, sets up an experiment to follow it, proves poor disproves whatever they were after, pulls down the experiment, rinse, repeat.

It has to be a cost thing. HLS is so insanely optimised down to the hardware level that adding any kind of compute for targeting would increase costs exponentially.

I’m not too deep into it anymore but there’s some great articles from Netflix out there talking about the crazy optimisations done to their edge servers for streaming.


It would break all the time stamps as well, unless you had fixed length ads. Sponsorblock already skips ads embedded in videos, so I don't think this would make ads much harder to block.


True, it would be sorta impossible to make timestamps work without sending the length of the ad section, so you could easily skip it programmatically.

Not really. They'll just need to recode for you that one minute with the ad. The rest of the video can stay the same.

If they're doing it smartly, they can even avoid full recompression and just splice in the ad.


Agree, it has to do with cost, considering the sheer number of videos they have. Plus, oftentimes the ad won't be relevant after a week or two, in which case they can't re-encode again.


Food and (international) travel almost exclusively.

Currently on the third $10k+ trip with my wife in 18 months but don’t have a car and am still using my laptop from 2014. Main reason is that I feel like I have my whole life to buy X or Y but only have the time and energy to travel long distances while young.


Using a 11 year old laptop isn't the reason you're able to spend $30k+ on travel over an 18 month period. Including that is like when people say "stop buying Starbucks if you want to buy a house." There are typically other circumstances are involved, even a $8 coffee every day is only $3,000 a year. That isn't make or break for getting a mortgage.


I agree with your point, but Tlto be fair, they also mentioned they don't own a car, which can prevent them from traveling depending on the condition and type of car they choose.

Care to elaborate? Last time I was in the US my prime order took over a week to be delivered because it had to get shipped from a warehouse in rural Ohio to San Diego. Here in Germany you get absolutely everything next day because the country is about the size of an average US state.

Calling Chernobyl a minor accident is insane. We are lucky it wasn’t worse but even then most of Europes forests are still polluted from the fallout. People directly killed during the incident is not a great indicator of incident severity when we're talking about environmental pollutants.

80% SoH is the de-facto industry standard for EoL/replacement. Mostly because after that you will eventually get a "knee-point" in your degradation curve at which operation is risky and largely inefficient.

Without knowing specifics, your MBP might have had issues with an individual cell such that initial capacity dropped significantly until the cell was disconnected.

I've seen several laptops start out in the 90-95% SoH range, drop off quickly to the mid-80s and stay there for a very long time. Similarly for iPhone batteries, they go below 90% pretty fast, then each % off takes longer and longer until they actually start dying. Maybe that's due to different baselines though, BMS of laptop batteries normally refer last-full energy to the design energy, which is probably just a fixed value in an EEPROM and might not ever be reached due to a more conservative charge cutoff and tolerances.


I think the idea here is to build a thin layer but BYOD.

I currently work for a company where most our value add lies in the data collection, cleaning and running of proprietary algorithms. A UI like this would be a game changer for us and something that Anthropic couldn’t easily replicate due to all the IP in our data pipeline.
