To be fair, they were just sharing their experience. I don’t recall them saying anything close to your interpretation.

JavaScript has its share of wtfs, so I wonder how much of it is which one someone experienced during some formative window in their learning.

Did you encounter JS first?

I find it interesting that you can’t lie to the police but the police can (and do) lie to you. Why?

I'd generally agree that the police shouldn't be able to lie to a detained suspect, or at least that such deception should be more constrained than it is in the context but, in general, the law as practiced hinges on the question, "does police deception render a detained suspect's confession or statements involuntary?"

If yes, then those confessions or statements could become inadmissable (i.e. the suspect was effectively compelled to testify against himself, in violation of the 5th Amendment). When police combine deception with coercion or threats, the answer to that question leans toward yes, but it will depend on the juristiction and the judge and is often assessed on a case-by-case basis. Police in any given juristiction probably have a reasonably good sense (from their own accumulated experience and local training) of what kind of deception results in the produced evidence becoming inadmissable in the courts where the defendant will appear.

That’s just an email signature, configurable (or removable, if you prefer) by the user. This is completely different, in my opinion.

On iOS, if you swipe control center down and then back up but don’t lift your finger, the screenshot will not have the logo. I do this with Twitter so my screenshots don’t have the X logo.

Interesting that this works. I know I have been frustrated recently when trying to take a screenshot of a bank transfer or something similar, but I couldn't find which app that was to test again. I tested on the iOS Passwords app, and I couldn't get the trick to work in that. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong, or it only works in specific apps.

Each time I tried to take a screenshot of a password, the password was missing from the screenshot - even when I kept the control centre pulled down far enough that the Password app was starting to look blurry.

I also tested this and couldn’t get the pull down method to work: Spotify still shows its annoying post-screenshot menu.

I think “staggering” is a pretty accurate way of putting it if blocking ads is in the same ballpark as running a AAA game on max settings.

If the computational requirement is within the realm of another normal day to day task, and if it cannot generally achieved with another cheaper approach, it would be contradictory to say it is staggering.

I would agree if this was an easily solvable problem with classical approaches. Clearly it is not, since even uBlock is giving up.

At any rate, "staggering" is relative. White-labeled web browsers becoming the most common GUI engine would have made an engineer's eyes water 20 years ago.

Blocking ads should not make my fans spin at full blast.

Yeah, it's pretty awful that Facebook has made it such a demanding task.

"Honey, I want to buy a gamer PC. This one is too slow to block Facebook ads."

Instructions are data

Therefore data are instructions, potentially malicious data/instructions -as seen here-

I think the point is that worse is better. There is incredible power in a standard (mostly) predictable platform, even if it could be done better.

I mean it kinda does.

> Once you irrigate a field, that water is gone.

This doesn't seem true to me, in the sense that anything is truly "gone". The water doesn't cease to exist or is converted to anything other than water. It just moves.

Right. The water isn't gone from the universe, certainly. But it's gone from the city/county water system. You've then got to wait for it to come back via the natural water cycle. Whereas it's a lot more efficient to keep as much water as possible in the human system and just keep cleaning and reusing it.
