Conspiratorial? Have you read "People's history", it's mainly observational. Makes a few ideological points at the end after the great mass of evidence but leaves it mostly to the reader.
The ruling class are hardly saints, as history has repeatedly pointed out. Usually the lower class opposes wars, and are led into them by their rulers.
The last 30 years the people who have benefitted the most are the top 0.5% and the people who have lost the most are the middle and lower classes. So really looks like the lower class is lifting the ruling class.
