It seems like a setup that gives remote users access to building-integrated CCTV feeds, microphones, and speakers for an intercom-like interface with a nice UI for navigating and directly connecting to a local user's devices (based on "where" they are in the space) would work much better than a "centralized" mobile machine. I would guess those whose culture already respects a presence of disembodied and remotely connected souls (transdimensional spirits, perhaps) would have an easy route to adopting this.
