Part of it was probably that older computers had a set form factor. You could recognize a C64 or an Amiga when you walked in the door. These days they all look the same.
On a different note I find myself pondering the similarities between the spread of malware now that everything is online 24/7, and the spread of illnesses in an era of cheap and fast air travel.
