I am currently fighting one of these 'sane defaults'. It is sane for one of the programs the output data goes into. Yet for a different program (and per spec) it is a different default expected. Hey they have a spot to change that default (sweet!). Except all of the plugins, and mainline code itself does not use that (ugh!). It is a ranges from hard coded, to using a different default, to using the configurable one. So here I am writing yet another plugin to override what these other plugins did. Usually like you said though 99.9% of the time it is just fine the way it is.
