I actually completely understand WHY the average "lay-person" thinks encryption must be bad because it allows terrorists and child pornographers to confer in secret to plan their nasty deeds. It's completely defensible to think that way from a standpoint of human nature and it would make all the sense in the world for that to be the case - that indeed, encryption is fundamentally something we cannot have due to xyz. Now, that's not how the situation actually is, but understanding that it isn't is more complex than thinking about it for a brief amount of time only
