I will never understand the trend of “using quotes around things”. Which is a shorthand version for “using quotes around things that I wanted to point to and say, hey, this is something that “goes over here”, you know, inside these quotes, to make sure that you understand exactly what I’m delimiting, since using commas, and semicolons, and colons wouldn’t fit for some reason. Oh look the thing that I’m quoting now consumes 80% of this paragraph. But this is way better than just saying “the modern rule of thumb is to not optimize by writing your own assembly.” Because then it isn’t 100% clear that the rule of thumb is delimited by (exactly) “[do] not optimize by writing your own assembly.” Ya see?”
