Facebook and instagram constantly email me trying to entice me to use the app. As I haven’t used it for years.

I think it’s purely to massage their Active Monthly User numbers to show growth.

I don't think so. They want you to use the App because through the they have way more ways to track you.

The app is a back door to your phone. It will vacuum all the data of it if allowed.
